Getting financial aid for college can be confusing. It seems like you’re always filling out some kind of form, waiting for some other form to be sent to you, or talking to someone at the financial aid office (or some other office). Here’s a quick rundown of who’s who and what’s what in the world of financial aid and the federal student loan industry.

Financial Aid Office
Usually a physical place at your school, the financial aid office is staffed with professionals who help new and returning students get money to pay for tuition bills and other expenses. These people really know their stuff and can help you find the right form to fill out and tell you what information needs to be on that form. They will also have information on scholarships, grants, and student loans, and the deadlines for each of these at your particular school. There’s typically a financial aid director, who is the head of the office, and financial aid counselors, who are full-time staff members available to help students. You may also find some part-time student workers in this office. If you are applying for financial aid for college, make sure you know where this office is located on campus.

Lender
A lender is a company that loans money to students and their parents to help pay for a college education. A lender may be your local bank that offers checking and savings accounts, along with education and consumer loans, or it may be a financial institution that deals strictly with education loans. Edamerica is an example of a lender that offers only education loans. When you apply for a federal student loan, you will be approved or denied by the lender based on the information required for the type of loan(s) you are requesting. Once approved, the lender will send your student loan proceeds to your school to cover the cost of your tuition bill and any other fees charged by the school. This transfer of money from the lender to the school is called a disbursement.

Servicer
A servicer is a company that the lender hires to take care of their student loan disbursements and borrower accounts. Think of the servicer as the maintenance crew for the lender. The servicer gathers the paperwork from borrowers, keeps track of the money going out as disbursements and coming in as payments, updates borrowers’ school attendance information, and performs customer service for borrowers. If you have questions about your student loan, you will probably end up speaking to the servicer, whose staff understands the student loan process from beginning to end and can help you with anything you might need in between. Holder
A holder may not be a term you hear as often as lender or servicer, but the holder is still an important part of the student loan process. The holder is the company that owns the loan you must repay. Sometimes your lender and holder are the same company, but many times, the original lender will sell their student loans to holders to generate cash flow for new loans. Lenders and holders have a symbiotic relationship that helps keep funds available to student and parent borrowers.

A holder will buy student loans from a lender and pay cash for them. The holder then owns these loans and gets to keep the interest that they earn. The lender takes the cash from the sale and makes new student loans that can be sold to a holder later for more cash.

This is a common practice in the banking industry and doesn’t affect the terms of your loan, how much you owe, or your interest rate. If your student loan is sold, the companies buying and selling your loan are required by federal law to notify you that your loan changed hands and who purchased it.

Guarantor
The guarantor is the organization that insures, or “guarantees,” your federal student loan against default. This guarantee protects the lender in the event that a borrower fails to repay a loan. When a borrower defaults, the guarantor will purchase the defaulted loan from the lender. The lender uses the guarantor’s payment to continue making student loans, while the guarantor takes the responsibility of collecting payments from the defaulted borrower. Guarantors can offer borrowers rehabilitation programs for their defaulted student loans. For example, if a borrower in default makes a certain number of on-time payments to the guarantor, the guarantor can declare the loan “rehabilitated” and sell the loan back to the lender.

U.S. Department of Education
A part of the federal government, the U.S. Department of Education administers many aspects of education in the United States, from primary schools to colleges and universities. Duties include collecting data and statistics on the performance of schools in the United States, monitoring education funding, and ensuring access to education. Regarding student loans, the Department of Education oversees how federal dollars are used for financial aid and determines how much federal aid students can receive using the information on the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The Department of Education reviews each student’s FAFSA and decides how much federal aid the student is eligible for, and how much the student and his or her family should contribute to the cost of education. This decision is communicated to the schools listed by the student on the FAFSA. The schools then create an award package for the student based on the information from the Department of Education.

No matter which credit card company you visit online, they will all ask for your personal information, such as your name, phone number, social security number, age, employer, income, and things of that nature.

Before you fill out the application online for your new card, you should always go over the terms and conditions very carefully. You should look at the APR, and ensure that there are no surprises. Once you have applied, the company will use your social security number to pull your credit report and use it to determine your credibility and whether or not they can be approved for a credit card.

When you begin filling out the application, you should make sure that the website you are using is encrypted. The standard encryption these days is SSL 128-bit, which ensure that the information you are sending is protected. If the website has less than 128-bit encryption, it may be possible for someone else to steal your information - which could result in identity theft.

Once you have finished filling out the application and send it on, you’ll have the final decision in a matter of minutes. If you are using a credit card company with the right technology, the decision will be shown on the screen. If the decision isn’t shown on the screen, it will be mailed to you via traditional snail mail. In the event that you don’t get approved, you’ll be mailed the reason why.

Applying for a credit card online is always the preferred way to receive a credit card, as things will work much faster. The following is taken from the NSW Government Action Plan for Energy Efficiency which was recently published by the Department of Environment and Climate Change NSW. The Premier of NSW, Morris Iemma, and Minister for Climate Change and Environment, Verity Firth, jointly issued this statement:

“The world’s best scientists are telling us unequivocally that we all urgently need to take action to address the impacts of climate change. The key to limiting the impacts of climate change is to work together, in partnership – government, business, and NSW families all taking active steps to reduce the cause of climate change, greenhouse gases. This is an area that the NSW Government is taking a leading role in…

There are also simple steps that we can all take at home and work today. By simply being aware of the energy we consume and embracing more efficient technologies we can not only reduce our energy bills, we can all make a significant contribution to addressing the impacts of climate change. That’s why the NSW Government has established an Energy Efficient Action Plan – a strong set of step-by-step initiatives that will help us all reduce our carbon footprint. Please take a few moments to understand how YOU can be a part of this state-wide effort to reduce energy use.”

Our goal is that by the year 2020, we will all be using energy much more efficiently in NSW. We will be setting numerical goals by the end of 2008, based on careful analysis of all our energy savings opportunities, to ensure the target we choose is ambitious but achievable. The NSW Government then will track and report each year on energy used by all sections of the community and industry. Our goal is to ensure both are performing well.

Some simple facts about energy use and climate change in NSW

· NSW household spend between $880 and $1660 every year on energy.
· A 20 per cent cut in energy use through energy efficiency measures could save each household up to $200 a year off their current energy bills.
· In NSW homes, the five biggest energy users are: hot water heating, heating and cooling, refrigeration and lighting.
· Each person in NSW generates an average of 23 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year. On this score, Australians are the highest emitters in the world.
· Almost half of all greenhouse gas emissions in NSW come from electricity generation, heat production, and the manufacturing and construction industries.

Energy efficiency is one of the most cost effective ways to cut greenhouse gas emissions, cut power bills, and reduce peak demand for electricity. Energy efficiency is all about being smarter with the energy we already have, about achieving “more with less”. Efficient use of energy saves money, protects the environment, helps business and industry productivity and competitiveness. Energy efficiency programs make the systems that generate and support energy more reliable and secure.

By investing in energy efficiency, households, business and government in NSW will benefit financially, socially and environmentally. Increased energy efficiency in homes, businesses and industry can provide financial benefits through reduced electricity bills and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Example of success from overseas: A 25-year program of energy efficiency measures in California has seen energy consumption per person rise by only 11.6% between 1980 and 2006, while the rest of the USA rose by more than 50%. This proves it can be done. If NSW could match Californian usage levels, we could reduce household electricity bills by close to $300 million per year, or about $115 per household.

The Top 5 things YOU can do at home to save energy and money:

1. Take shorter showers – help save water and energy by keeping your showers under 5 minutes. If you have electric hot water, consider changing to solar, gas, or heat pump.
2. Don’t be fooled by standby – save loads of energy by switching off appliances at the power point where possible.
3. Don’t overcool or overheat – for most efficient energy use, set your heaters and air conditioners to between 18-21 degrees C in winter and 23- 26 degrees C in summer.
4. Be fridge smart – a fridge with a top star rating will save money and energy. Think twice about a second fridge.
5. Insulate your home – low cost solutions include blocking draughts around doors and windows and taking advantage of Government rebates to install ceiling insulation.

As for your insurance cost, if the WI speeding violation is put on your Bloomington Illinois driving record then your insurance provider, could see it the next time they pull your Motor Vehicle Record. Depending upon their rating system this out of state traffic ticket may or may not increase your car insurance premium cost.

There is a global recognition that the creative requirements of global developments in the 21st Century and the competitiveness of nations will be dictated by the quality of the human capital stock resident in each country and across different regions. It is the human capital that will create the conditions for technological and economic advancement, and countries with high investments in the institutions and processes that create human capital development will forge ahead in their competitiveness whilst those which fail to invest will remain uncompetitive.

The growth of business education has gone hand-in-hand with numerous innovations in pedagogical models, course content and curricula, the role of research and the relationship with government and industry. India now trains largest number of MBAs with about 75,000 degrees annually.

Businesses in India have started spreading in towns, cities and semi urban areas in search of newer markets. These are seen as future markets for telecommunications, FMCG and retail sector among others. As companies expand their operations, they are not finding enough trained people to fit into different positions.

The emergence of globalisation has added a complex dimension to the management and development of human capital. The global skill sets requires understanding of the global market. These requirements are also constantly changing in response to global improvements.

According to industry estimates only a quarter of all graduates are employable and about 80% of job seekers in employment exchange are without any professional skills. India is suffering from a massive shortage of skilled manpower.

Considering the huge requirement of training in MBA in the area of international business, Ministry of Commerce established Indian Institute of Foreign Trade in 1963. The mandate of the Institute was to act as a think tank for the Ministry by providing inputs in the area of research and training to young graduates in international business.

The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), is an institute that has carved a niche in teaching international business to aspiring and experienced managers for the last four decades. Rapid strides have been made by the Institute in achieving its mission to strengthen, sustain and professionalise business knowledge through creative research and teaching, and learning by integrating with organizations, institutions and universities both within and beyond national boundaries.

IIFT’s core competency in teaching International business finds its relevance in today’s world owing to the liberalized economic environment and increasingly globalized business activities. The external trade sector has emerged as a mainstay for all countries contributing in a major way to its growth and sustainability in a changed global environment. India is witnessing high growth owing to a vibrant manufacturing and services sectors, and is also experiencing significant export growth, enhanced global presence and competition. It has expanded its vision through setting up of several esteemed research centres like the Centre for WTO Studies, Centre for Small and Medium Enterprises Studies (SME Centre) and the Centre for International Trade in Technology (CITT). Overall, the institute has so far brought out over 650 research studies, policy analysis and surveys.

The Ph.D. programme of the Institute covers Doctoral research in a variety of business related areas leading to the award of Ph.D degree. It is targeted at research scholars, members of teaching faculty in universities and institutes of higher learning, professionals from private, public and government sectors.

Through its Management Development Programmes (MDPs) Division, IIFT offers one of the most rewarding experiences to working executives, thereby bringing a broad range of perspectives into management training. The Institute has a well-developed executive training division having the prime objective of providing relevant training to executives at all levels in the corporate, government and public sectors. The Institute provides high caliber training through a variety of Management Development Programmes. The Institute has emerged as the nodal centre for conducting training programmes on WTO related issues which are participated by officials of the Government, State Governments, Developing Country professionals from abroad and Trade and Industry.

Some of the Sponsoring Indian and International Organizations are: UNCTAD/WTO, International Trade Centre, UNDP, UN-ESCAP, UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), Colombo Plan Secretariat, Commonwealth Secretariat, ETA Ascon Ltd., India Egypt Joint Working Group, etc., reputed Industries and Industry Associations.

IIFT’s International Collaboration and Capacity Development (ICCD) Division focuses on discovery and expanding horizons which has led it to establish international collaboration with the best in the field. IIFT has successfully formed associations with various prestigious International Associations including IATTO (International Association of Trade Training Organisations), Helsinki, Finland, EFMD (European Foundation for Management Development), which are highly regarded for their competence. IIFT is also taking membership of Network of International Business and Economic Schools (NIBES), which was founded in 1996 and has more than 25 members from Europe, Asia, US, Australia.

With IIFT’s unique ability to provide cutting edge education in international business, a need was felt to expand its operations beyond Delhi, and as a result, a new Centre of IIFT was set up in Kolkata in 2006. The Kolkata Centre is also functioning as an important hub for various research activities including the WTO Centre set up jointly with the Government of West Bengal, enriching the pedagogy at IIFT.

The Institute has a Placement Cell to facilitate common placement of students of the 2-year full time MBA (IB) programme for both Delhi and Kolkata.
